BSA 103 Research project.

Question:
How an anthropological study of an imaginary race could be presented as a research journal.

For this project i will research the anatomy and biology of both humans and animals to create a new race which derives characteristics from both Humans and an array of animals.
a starting reference point for aspect of my research is :

  1. James Cameron's Avatar race the Navi. A full fantasy entomological study produced with the movie.
  2. Leonardo Da Vinci Study of human anatomy.
  3. The Video "The Secrets of Drawing": Episode 1: "The Line of Inquiry" 2005 as shown in class gives a good list of artist model who did artistic studies into animal and human anatomy.
  4. Zoology Research journals that give information on the anatomy and behavior patterns of animals would be a good scientific research point.
For the culture of the race i believe  there  good research journals that can give me an idea of the aspects of culture that a cultural anthropological study would cover.
Ethnological studies are also a good research point to look into.

Some aspects of culture i know i want to cover are :

  • Religion/ belief
  • language
  • behaviour
  • tradition (rituals/ coming of age rituals)
  • technology/tools / technological level in comparison to us (e.g :stone age, bronze age)
  • Diet, food production/ farming and hunting and gathering.
  • clothing
  • political / hierarchy
  • Economy (do they trade goods and services or have a currency)
  • types of jobs (farmers, warriors, educators)
  • clothing ( what do they wear, what is it made of , and why is it made in that style)

Project  timeline :
I know i want to create the look of my race before i start on there culture as limitation and aspects of there anatomy will influence  aspects of there culture. (this list is subject to change)
  1.  Research anatomy and biology of animals and humans
  2. start building roughs of what my race will look like
  3. finish development of race look
  4. start researching clothing ( for this i will need to decide the level of technology they have what they can produce what materials they have available to them and gives a good idea of they types of human cultures i need to look at (e.g if they wear animal furs and bones i can look at more tribal cultures like Zulu or Aztec or if they wear leather and fabric i can look at more medieval cultures or a combination of both.)
  5. From clothing start researching other aspects of culture.
  6. finish researching culture aspects use research to build culture of my race
  7. finish creating material for race culture and begin organizing it into a basic research journal.
  8. write script for the story based research journal and create a basic outline of how the story will flow through the book and the research notes and materials i have created.
  9. start making the journal rough get other peoples opinion on the flow of the story im telling and the notes and materials i have added. dont want anything to seem forced into the journal.I want the journal to be a story some could pick up start reading and follow the story of a professor who found a new race of demi-humans and documented his study of these creatures and there culture as he lived among them and learned there ways (similar to avatar story line) as a day by day journal.
  10. produce final product.
