A friend pointed out since i am still doing a story based research journal i can still incorporate aspects of the research i did into native american culture into my story. I will be doing this my making references to native american culture in the different parts of the races culture my explorer character is exposed to through out his journey.
Today i began work on my actual story as i believe the story will take the bulk of my time to complete as it will need to be coherent and flow like it is a story being told by the explorer.
I began by deciding how i wanted to start the start the story. I decided i wanted my explorer to have some back story and for the first few pages of the journal to be his introduction.
Basically :
- how did he find this race
- where did he find this race
- why was he there
- what is his motivation/ story behind this discovery.
For this i started looking for references and actually landed on a childhood classic of mine. The Disney Film Atlantis :
This film was a staple of my childhood and has one of the most memorial explorer characters i have ever seen.
Milo:
int he film the main character Milo is a researcher for London University who want to become a great explorer like his Grandfather. He is obsessed with finding Atlantis a lost city his grandfather use to always tell him about.
I wanted my main character to take aspects from Milo and incorporate them into his personality.
I decided early on not to draw an illustration of this character and instead let the reader of the journal create an image of what he looks like as they read the story.
I created a rough of my journal beginning settling on these key features:
- the main Character would be Harold Langdon (named after my grandfather )
- He would be a researcher for the Royal institute of science
- this is his first exploration mission (allowing me to use his Nativity to create conflict and error in his judgement and ability to document his findings)
- he will be tasked with mapping a mysterious island off the cape of south Africa
- it is on the island he will find the new race of sub humans.
